TAMPA - A former Army captain serving a 131/2-year federal sentence for an accident that killed a 24-year-old woman and her unborn child was convicted of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide Wednesday in circuit court for the same charges.

Judge Ronald Ficarrotta sentenced Joseph Piotrowski of Riverview to 30 years in state prison for the accident that killed Angela Beasley, 24, and her unborn child on April 18, 2001.

Ficarrotta ordered that Piotrowski's state sentence be served concurrent with the federal sentence, which Piotrowski received after pleading guilty in military court.

Piotrowski was in the joint communications support element at MacDill Air Force Base at the time of the accident. He was dismissed from the Army, reprimanded and ordered to forfeit his pay at his federal sentencing.

Records showed this was not Piotrowski's first accident involving alcohol. He had been accused of sideswiping a pickup truck in Hernando County in 2000, leaving the scene and later failing a sobriety test. Beasley was about five months pregnant when Piotrowski ran a stop sign and collided with her car at Riverview Drive and Providence Road.

Ficarrotta also ordered a lifetime revocation of Piotrowski's driver's license.
