F1 champ shakes off fire

SPIELBERG, Austria - Michael Schumacher saw orange flames rise near his head during a fiery pit stop, yet remained focused.

The Ferrari crew doused the fire and the driver. Not long after, Schumacher was celebrating his Formula One win in Spielberg.

Schumacher beat Kimi Raikkonen for his third straight win and 65th of his career, extending his series record and closing within two points of Raikkonen for first place in the standings.

"I was watching around and seeing what was going on," said Schumacher, the three-time defending world champion. "You know you have protection. You have the overalls. You know you can survive for a good while."

Schumacher beat Raikkonen's McLaren-Mercedes by 3.3 seconds in the 69-lap race. Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, was third, 3.9 seconds behind.

On Lap 23, Schumacher's crew had to battle flames when a fuel hose would not come off during refueling. He fell back to third. On Lap 32, as leader Juan Montoya's engine failed, Schumacher passed Raikkonen for the lead.

INDY 500: Drivers took no chances on bump day.

When Jimmy Kite's car sputtered twice in his first qualifying attempt, he turned it off, coasted into the pits and waited for another chance to make the lineup for Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Indy Racing League filled the grid, avoiding the ignominy of starting fewer than the usual 33 cars for the first time since 1947.

But the only suspense was whether crashes or mechanical problems would prevent the nine non-qualifiers from starting. There was no bumping on bump day.

"It seemed to be more a formality than pressure-packed, like it usually is," said Jimmy Vasser, the day's third-fastest qualifier.

So little was at stake on the 21/2-mile oval that some fans stretched out across empty bleachers and napped.

GOULDS PUMPS ITT 200: Ron Hornaday beat Brian Vickers by less than half a second in the Busch Grand National event at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway to end a 63-event winless drought.

"The fans really pump me up here," Hornaday said. "And it's a great track, a driver's race track."

Hornaday led 148 of the 200 laps and took the lead for good by passing rookie David Stremme on Lap 146. Mike Bliss was third and points leader David Green fourth.

There were six lead changes over the first 150 laps, with Hornaday leading for 98.

K&N FILTERS SUPERNATIONALS: Doug Kalitta won his second Top Fuel final of the season at the NHRA event in Englishtown, N.J. Kalitta covered the quarter-mile in 4.494 seconds at 328.54 mph to beat points leader Larry Dixon. Whit Bazemore (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Shawn Gann (Pro Stock Bike) also won.

Brandon Bernstein crashed in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations and is expected to miss 2-3 months. He was in stable condition with lower back injuries.

ELSEWHERE: Terry Borcheller passed J.C. France on the final lap to win the Barber 250, a Grand American Sports Car Series race in Birmingham, Ala. Borcheller and co-driver Forest Barber won in a Chevrolet Doran. ... Ed Carpenter won the Freedom 100, the first Infiniti Pro Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in a race delayed Saturday by rain.
