NL: Rookie stays hot in Arizona win

PHOENIX - Brandon Webb has made five big-league starts without a bad outing.

Webb and his nasty sinker shut down Pittsburgh for 72/3 innings as Arizona salvaged the final game of its three-game series 8-6 on Sunday.

The right-hander, 24, scattered eight hits, struck out six and walked three. He has a 2.02 ERA in six appearances, the past five as a starter.

"This kid's unflappable," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "Nothing seems to bother him. He's very emotionless out there on the mound. He's just going to keep firing that sinker out there until I come out and take the ball away from him."

Six Diamondbacks had an RBI, including an NL-record four sacrifice flies.

With Arizona leading 2-1, Tony Womack led off the third with a bunt single. Junior Spivey bounced one to third baseman Amaris Ramirez, whose throw to second failed to force Womack. Both scored on singles by David Dellucci and Lyle Overbay to make it 4-1.

DODGERS 2, MARLINS 1: Hideo Nomo pitched seven strong innings and Alex Cora drove in two runs for host Los Angeles, which completed a three-game sweep. Nomo has won his past two starts against Florida after going 0-8 in his first nine against it.

The Marlins put two runners on with one out in the eighth. Tom Martin relieved Guillermo Mota and threw one pitch, getting pinch-hitter Ivan Rodriguez to ground into a double play. Eric Gagne struck out the side to convert his 23rd consecutive save opportunity.

CARDINALS 6, CUBS 3: Scott Rolen drove in four runs for St. Louis, which has won only four of 12 but is 22-4 against the Cubs at home in the past four seasons.

In the seventh, Albert Pujols hit a slow roller toward third. Antonio Alfonseca's late throw to first was wild, allowing Fernando Vina to score from third. Rolen followed with a two-run homer.

METS 5, GIANTS 1: A day after Steve Trachsel became the first New York pitcher to get into the eighth this season, Tom Glavine took a shutout into the ninth. San Francisco has lost seven of nine after being held to two runs the past two games.

Jason Phillips, called up from Triple-A on Saturday, homered on a 3-and-1 pitch from Kurt Ainsworth for a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

PHILLIES 3, ASTROS 1: Kevin Millwood threw a six-hitter for his second complete game of the season for visiting Philadelphia. Millwood is 4-0 in his past six starts with a 1.64 ERA.

Jim Thome walked with two outs in the first, and Pat Burrell drove him in with a triple to center. Centerfielder Craig Biggio, attempting to catch Burrell's hit, fell while running up the small hill in center, and the ball dropped out of his reach. Tim Redding walked the next three batters, forcing home a run, to make it 2-0.

ROCKIES 4, EXPOS 0: Shawn Chacon pitched six innings as Colorado recorded only the 22nd shutout ever at Coors Field. With two outs in the fifth, Ronnie Belliard walked and went to third on Jay Payton's single. Belliard made it 2-0 on Todd Helton's infield single. Belliard added a two-run double in the eighth.

BRAVES 6, PADRES 3: Vinny Castilla homered for the third time in two games and Russ Ortiz won his fifth consecutive decision for visiting Atlanta, which has won 27 of 32. Castilla hit a two-run shot to left-center on the first pitch he saw from Brian Lawrence with one out in the sixth to make it 5-1.

REDS 6, BREWERS 3 (10): Aaron Boone hit his second homer of the game in the 10th for visiting Cincinnati. Austin Kearns hit a run-scoring single with two outs in the 10th to put the Reds ahead. Boone followed with his 13th homer and third in two days. Cincinnati tied it at 3 on a two-out single by pinch-hitter Jose Guillen in the seventh.
