DADE CITY - Two attackers beat and robbed a 42-year-old St. Petersburg man on U.S. 301 near Lock Street on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office reported.

The man, whose name the Times is withholding because the robbers remain at large, had pulled over about 3 a.m. to secure a steel welder in the back of his pickup truck, the report stated. Two men threw him to the ground and began kicking and punching him, he told deputies.

The attackers took an undisclosed amount of money from his pocket and took change from a can on the floorboard of his truck, the report said.

He reported the attack to authorities after going to East Pasco Medical Center for treatment. He had cuts on his face and knees; his left eye was swollen shut and his face was black and blue, the report said. A deputy observed what appeared to be a shoe print on the left side of his head. The case was forwarded by deputies to the sheriff's major crimes unit.
