One week after leading Riverview to the Class 6A state final, pitcher Beth DiPietro was named Softball Player of the Year on Thursday by the Hillsborough County School Board.
Sharks coach Angela Slater spoke about her ace before calling DiPietro up to collect her award, which is given each year to the most well-rounded and valuable player in the county.
Eli Samaha of Plant won the boys Andres Garcia Memorial Tennis Award and Chamberlain's Becky Gordon won the girls tennis award. Samaha, Plant's valedictorian and two-year team MVP, was a district champion three out of four years in singles and doubles.
Gordon, the Chiefs' MVP in tennis and basketball, plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
County athletic director Vernon Korhn also gave out the GPA academic awards, which are awarded to teams with the highest collective unweighted grade point averages. Durant won the award in baseball (3.358), girls tennis (3.875) and all-sports comprehensive (3.332). Plant won in softball (3.441) and girls track (3.544), Hillsborough won in boys tennis (3.700) and Gaither won in boys track (3.240) with 47 team members.
