DADE CITY - The Class of 2003 might not always have it this perfect, but for one night everything was right.
The fireworks went off without a hitch. Silly String flew through the air. Classmates made a heartfelt gift to one of their own and implored each other to never stop climbing.
Festivities began Friday with a balloon launch. Red and black balloons drifted into the evening sky and floated north. The ceremony ended with rock music and a blast from the Pirates' cannon as 223 students became alumni of Pasco High School.
"Every person graduating here tonight has succeeded in growing beyond their limitations," National Honor Society president Karen Rix told her classmates. "As a student, look to the future. As a graduate, remember your past."
In their speeches, Rix and others offered a reflection of the times.
Among her high school memories of proms and homecoming floats, Rix recalled bomb threats. And salutatorian Monica Richter, reminding classmates of those who took risks, talked of the war against Iraq and the threat of chemical attack.
But even with a nod to world events, speakers clung to traditional themes: hope, dreams and favorite memories.
Class president Elizabeth Mercer invited classmates to go out and find themselves.
"When all is said and done, the only thing that matters in life is being true to yourself," she said. "Go out and experiment. Go out and find the spice that makes your blood boil."
Richter dared her class to take risks, to fail and try again and again.
"Don't worry about failure," she said. "Worry about the chances missed when we didn't even try."
Valedictorian Lindsey Herndon inspired her class with verse.
"Remember your friends, with whom you'll part," she said. "Carry their love within your heart."
And Student Council president Erica Murburg said that while her family gave her strength to go forward, she learned in school that family isn't limited to blood relatives. There is family in friends, she said.
That caring came through in the end. As the crowd of more than 3,000 friends and relatives in the high school stadium prepared to get up and greet their graduates, Mercer had one more surprise.
It was for classmate Nick Tucker, whose father, Lynwood Tucker, died in a house fire May 17.
Mercer stopped the crowd for a moment and announced the Class of 2003 had a final gesture. The class donated the proceeds of its gift fund to Nick Tucker in honor of the work he did as a Student Council member.
