AL: Loaiza delivers payback

TORONTO - Esteban Loaiza took pleasure in beating his former team.

Loaiza allowed two runs in 72/3 innings as the Chicago White Sox beat the Blue Jays 3-2 Thursday night.

"Especially pitching against my old teammates, I want to do good," Loaiza said.

Loaiza allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two. His league-leading ERA increased from 1.92 to 1.96 as he tied for the league lead with his eighth win.

Loaiza, 9-10 with a 5.71 ERA for Toronto last season, wasn't happy with how the Blue Jays treated him in the offseason.

"They didn't want me, period," he said this week. "It upset me because at first they were like, "We'll talk later,' then I talked to my agent at the end and they were like, "No, we don't need him.' It's like throwing a piece of paper in the trash."

Carlos Delgado hit his 16th homer but committed two of Toronto's season-high four errors, including one that led to two unearned runs in the fourth.

Toronto, which leads the majors in runs, hits and extra-base hits, has scored two runs in its past two games. Jon Garland and Billy Koch combined for Chicago's fourth shutout of the season Wednesday.

Chicago split the four-game series after losing the first two.

Koch, Toronto's former closer, got two outs in the ninth for his sixth save in eight chances.

Chicago manager Jerry Manuel couldn't be happier with Loaiza.

"He's having a tremendous year," Manuel said. "This was a big test for him. They probably know him as well as anyone, but yet still he was able to pretty much dominate them, and that's a very good hitting club. That club was very hot when we got here and for him to shut him them down they way he did, along with Garland, speaks volumes."

MARINERS 10, TWINS 6: Bret Boone homered, doubled twice and drove in four and Gil Meche pitched seven-plus strong innings for visiting Seattle.

In the first game of a four-game series between the division leaders, the Mariners tied their season high with 18 hits and won for the 10th time in 13 games. The Twins had won 21 of 27, including two of three last weekend in Seattle.

Boone's two-run homer off Brad Radke gave the Mariners a 4-1 lead in the fifth. The drive to left-center was his 14th home run of the season and the 200th of his 13-year career.

A'S 6, ROYALS 1: Mark Mulder tied for the league lead with his eighth win, leading visiting Oakland over reeling Kansas City.

Mulder improved to 6-0 against Kansas City, allowing eight hits in seven innings. He improved his ERA to 2.36, second to Loaiza, and pitched at least seven innings for the ninth straight start.

RANGERS 8, ORIOLES 4: Hank Blalock went 3-for-3, walked twice and scored twice as visiting Texas ended Baltimore's four-game winning streak. Ruben Sierra hit a two-run homer in the ninth, helping the Rangers to their ninth win in 11 games.
