South Florida named Steve Henson an assistant basketball coach Thursday, leaving new coach Robert McCullum with one position to fill on his staff.
It is the third time McCullum and Henson, 35, have crossed paths. Henson was a star player at Kansas State in 1989-90 when McCullum was assistant coach. In 1999-2000, McCullum and Henson were members of Lon Kruger's staff at Illinois.
"(Henson) is extremely knowledgeable about the game of basketball and he is an outstanding teacher," McCullum said. "Our entire team, especially our guards, will benefit greatly from Steve's knowledge and experience from his days as a player in college and in the NBA."
Henson spent six seasons as a point guard in the NBA with Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, Portland and Detroit. He was an assistant coach with the Hawks this season.
"Once you get players on board, you have to have players reach their fullest potential," McCullum said. "Steve is going to be a big part of our staff being successful in those areas."
The USF staff also includes assistant Tommy Deffebaugh, who came with McCullum from Western Michigan, and director of basketball operations Scott Thompson, who was hired from Ole Miss. Clayton Bates initially joined McCullum but returned to Western Michigan to join new coach Steve Hawkins.
