DOVER, Del. - Ryan Newman solidified his reputation as the fastest driver in NASCAR by winning his fourth pole of the season in qualifying Friday at Dover International Speedway.
Newman has consecutive poles and again leads the Winston Cup circuit in that category after a series-best seven last year.
He hustled his No. 12 Dodge around the Monster Mile in 22.682 seconds, turning a fast lap of 158.716 mph, in qualifying for Sunday's MBNA Armed Forces Family 400.
"We have lots of horsepower," Newman said, deferring credit to his crew. " ... The car unloaded off the truck very fast, and we didn't have to do too much with it."
Newman finished fifth after taking the pole last week for the Coca-Cola 600. Sunday he seeks his second win this year and third of his career.
Starting second will be Penske Racing South teammate Rusty Wallace, who turned a lap of 157.322 mph.
Jeremy Mayfield gave Dodge the first three spots on the 43-car grid with a lap of 157.198.
MBNA AMERICA 200: Jason Leffler got his first Craftsman Truck Series win after dominant teammate Ted Musgrave lost his engine at Dover.
Musgrave's engine blew with 57 laps left after he led the previous 52 laps.
Leffler, running second, took the lead in his Dodge and was never seriously threatened. He ended a string of frustration in the series, where he had six second-place finishes.
MILWAUKEE MILE 250: Rain washed out qualifying for tonight's CART Champ Car race in West Allis, Wis., the first night race in series history. The grid was set based on speeds in practice, where Alex Tagliani (177.914 mph) was fastest, earning the pole.
ROUTE 66 NATIONALS: A tornado watch interrupted qualifying for the NHRA event in Joliet, Ill. Before the delay, John Force led Funny Car through one round, running the quarter-mile in 4.763 seconds at 322.81 mph. Doug Kalitta led Top Fuel. Allen Johnson led Pro Stock, and Angelle Savoie topped Pro Stock Motorcycle, the only categories to get two rounds in. Qualifying continues today for Sunday's eliminations.
CASTRONEVES, KANAAN UNHURT: Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan walked away without injury after a hard crash that turned Castroneves upside down during an IRL IndyCar test session at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Castroneves, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner who finished second to Penske Racing teammate Gil de Ferran in Sunday's Indy race, ran into the rear of the car driven by fellow Brazilian Kanaan.
