Percival back on a mound

ST. PETERSBURG - Angels closer Troy Percival, out with a hip injury, reported no problems after throwing 55 pitches in a 12-minute bullpen session Saturday at Tropicana Field.

It was the first time Percival has thrown off the mound since going on the 15-day disabled list May 23.

"I've got zero problems with my arm, and my hip feels fine after throwing today," Percival said.

Percival is scheduled to throw again today and pitch in a simulated game Wednesday. Barring setbacks he might be activated when eligible to come off the DL.

Percival, the Angels' career saves leader with 257, had an MRI exam this month that revealed a strain of the gluteus muscle and degenerative changes in the hip joint.

This is the 33-year-old right-hander's fifth stint on the disabled list, the first since July, when he had a left Achilles' infection.

He began last season on the DL because of a strained muscle in his right side.

ASTROS: Right-hander Roy Oswalt was activated from the 15-day DL, and reliever Brandon Puffer was sent to Triple-A New Orleans. Oswalt, 3-4 with a 3.68 ERA in nine games, had been on the DL with a strained right groin. He started against the Cubs.

ATHLETICS: Hitting coach Thad Bosley was fired after returning to Oakland from the game in Kansas City for a meeting with general manager Billy Beane. Dave Hudgens will take over as interim hitting coach.

BRAVES: Leftfielder Chipper Jones left in the ninth with a jammed left wrist after a leadoff double. Manager Bobby Cox said he would not know his status today.

DIAMONDBACKS: Right-hander Curt Schilling, hit twice on his right hand by line drives on Friday night, does not expect to miss his next start. The injury was diagnosed as a bone bruise, and X-rays were negative.

EXPOS: Right-hander Zach Day was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Thursday, with an inflamed right shoulder. Right-hander Sun-Woo Kim was recalled from Triple-A Edmonton to fill Day's spot.

MARINERS: Catcher Pat Borders was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the roster spot of outfielder John Mabry (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday.

METS: Left-hander Mike Stanton was placed on the 15-day DL with a swollen left knee, and lefty Mike Bacsik was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Stanton is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday.

TWINS: Longtime public-address announcer Bob Casey and former outfielder Bob Allison were inducted into the team's hall of fame. Allison, who died in 1995, and Casey became the hall's 11th and 12th members.
