SAN DIEGO - Kenyan Ondoro Osoro won Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, three years after he was shot in the neck during a carjacking in his homeland.
Osoro outkicked countryman Peter Chebet to win in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 38 seconds on a cool, overcast morning.
"I didn't even know if I'd ever run again," Osoro said after holding off Chebet by 2 seconds. "It is like a miracle to me."
Osoro was in his third marathon since being shot July 23, 2000, after refusing to hand over the keys to his Toyota Land Cruiser to gunmen. He has a scar on the back of his neck where he was shot, and one under his right ear where the bullet exited. Osoro said he still feels numbness in his right arm.
Irina Bogacheva won the women's race in 2:29:52, 34 seconds faster than Fatuma Roba.
HOME DEPOT INVITATIONAL: Olympic champion Maurice Greene won the 100 meters in 9.94 seconds, the second-fastest time in the world this year, in Carson, Calif. Olympic champions Allen Johnson (110 high hurdles) and Stacy Dragila (women's pole vault) also won.
FBK GAMES: Kenenisa Bekele ran in 26:53.7 in his first 10,000-meter race and the fastest this year to beat fellow Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie in Hengelo, Netherlands.
HORSES: Funny Cide endures rain
Funny Cide jogged on a Belmont Park track that was hit again by rain, creating challenging conditions for trainers preparing for the final leg of the Triple Crown. Strong wind flapped flags in the infield and a steady rain kept the main track muddy. Trainer Barclay Tagg said if the track is in good shape, the gelding will put in his final major work Tuesday.
BASKETBALL: Three schools top list
Kentucky, Connecticut and Missouri each had two players picked as finalists for the U.S. Pan American Games team. Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon were named from Connecticut, Gerald Fitch and Chuck Hayes represented Kentucky and Rickey Paulding and Arthur Johnson play at Missouri. The 17 finalists will be whittled to 12 after training camp July 15-29 in Orlando. The games are Aug. 2-6 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
DERBY LANEL: Whistler's Cove a winner
Whistler's Cove won his second of three distance races Saturday, beating Black Mack. Whistler's Cove is preparing for the three-eighths mile St. Petersburg Derby on June 28. ... Qualifying for the final five-sixteenths mile stakes of the season will be Wednesday night when 16 sprinters compete in two heats. The top four from each heat will run in Saturday's T.L. Weaver Memorial Stakes. ... The track will offer wagering on Saturday's Belmont Stakes. Advance wagering begins 11:30 a.m. Friday. Admission is free Friday and Saturday.

SURFING: Brothers Shea and Cory Lopez of Indian Rocks Beach advanced to the round of 16 in the Quiksilver Pro event in Tavarua and Namotu Islands, Fiji. Shea defeated Flavio Padaratz and Cory beat Richard Lovett.
BOWLING: Kelly Kulick upset 19-time champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard 261-195 to win the PWBA U.S. Open in Sterling Heights, Mich. Kulick received $30,000 for her first title.
CYCLING: Gilberto Simoni of Italy won the Giro d'Italia for the second time in three years, finishing 7:06 ahead of countryman Stefano Garzelli. During the final stage a small plane crashed about 500 yards from the course. Both people on board were killed, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
BOXING: Andre Berto of Winter Haven beat Tim Bradley 5-0 at 152 pounds and received the Golden Boy award for the Golden Gloves tournament's most outstanding boxer late Saturday in Las Vegas. Travis Walker of Tallahassee stopped Kevin Lightburn in the fourth round to win the 201-plus title.
