MONTE CARLO, Monaco - Juan Pablo Montoya won Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix, ending Michael Schumacher's three-race winning streak in Formula One.
Montoya, driving a Williams-BMW, held off Kimi Raikkonen in the final laps on the street course for his second victory. His other came at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix.
Raikkonen, in a McLaren-Mercedes, lost by 0.6 seconds and extended his standings lead over Schumacher 48 points to 44. Schumacher, in a Ferrari, was third, 1.7 seconds behind Montoya.
Montoya and Graham Hill are the only drivers to capture the Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix. Williams, one of the sport's most dominant teams, hadn't won on the 2.08-mile course since Keke Rosberg did it in 1983.
"Winning in Monaco is a bit like when I was in America and I went to Indy," Montoya said. "It is the most special race you can win."
Montoya led by about a second with 18 laps to go. The top two stayed that way until Raikkonen edged closer in the final five laps.
In the last two laps, Raikkonen drew within a few car lengths on tight curves and Schumacher lurked a few seconds back.
"I was not very lucky with starting in second place," Raikkonen said. "I seem to get bad starts. I tried to get past but it's impossible here. Especially in the final laps."
ROUTE 66 NATIONALS: Tony Schumacher earned his first win of the season at the NHRA event in Joliet, Ill., beating defending champion Larry Dixon in the Top Fuel final. Whit Bazemore defeated Tommy Johnson Jr. in the Funny Car final, Kurt Johnson defeated Jeg Coughlin to take the Pro Stock final and points lead, and Angelle Savoie beat Reggie Showers to take the Pro Stock Motorcycle final and points lead.
