Equipment stolen from rec center

ST. PETERSBURG - Thieves broke into two portable buildings at the Roberts Recreation Center during the weekend and took much of the equipment that is used for its summer teen camp.

Among the items taken from the center at 1246 50th Ave. N were a new 27-inch television set and PlayStation 2, two computers, a small refrigerator, a cell phone and two radios.

"They took everything from us," said teen camp recreation leader Kathy Reynolds.

"They broke the handle right off a door, and they just carried everything right out. I just can't imagine anyone in the neighborhood didn't see anything."

She said the portables were brought in especially for the summer camp, which serves 85 children between the ages of 12 and 15 from throughout the city. It is one of 11 teen camps in St. Petersburg.

The theft upset the campers, Ms. Reynolds said.

"They are dumbfounded. Today is like a home day for them and we use those things," she said Monday.

"We are hoping to be able to replace them, maybe do some fundraisers and come up with some money. It was just a shock."
