County turns back challenge to sign law

Commissioners deny a request for a larger sign, but ask staffers to draft a change allowing larger ones in special cases.

DADE CITY - The County Commission rejected the first major challenge to its new sign ordinance Tuesday evening, denying a developer's request for larger signs at a Land O'Lakes shopping center.

But the issue prompted commissioners to call for an amendment to the sign ordinance that would allow developers to install larger signs, if they include attractive architectural features.

As it's worded now, the ordinance limits the Collier Commons shopping center to 210-square-foot signs along State Road 54 and Collier Parkway, commissioners said.

The developer, Primerica Group, proposed signs with 210 square feet of lettering; after adding a base, pediment and other architectural features, however, the total surface area reached 385 square feet.

"We are just trying to add to the flavor, the beauty and the aesthetic appeal of the center," Primerica Group owner Richard Trzcinski told commissioners.

Commissioner Steve Simon applauded the attractive signs; but said the ordinance won't allow anything over 210 square feet.

"I don't know that we're on firm ground to change the entire ordinance here and now, and that's what we would be doing," Simon said.

Commissioner Peter Altman asked county staffers to draft an amendment to the sign ordinance that would allow 210 square feet of lettering, plus additional area for architectural features. The overall size of the signs would be limited, although none of the commissioners suggested a figure Tuesday evening.

Any amendment would have to go through a couple of public hearings.

In other news Tuesday night, commissioners passed an ordinance expanding the Mosquito Control District to cover the entire county. Those joining the district will pay an extra 0.25-mill property tax, or 25 cents per $1,000 of assessed property.
