Jesuit coach gets top honor

TAMPA - After a season in which he guided his team to a 25-8 record and another appearance in the state tournament, Jesuit coach John Crumbley was named the Florida Dairy Farmers coach of the year.

It is the second time Crumbley, who has coached Jesuit for 19 years and is seven wins short of 500, has won the award.

Crumbley was chosen from a group of six coaches - one each from Class A through 6A - after being voted the 3A coach of the year by his peers.

"It's voted on by other coaches," Crumbley said. "So that makes it very special."

One of Crumbley's hallmarks is the tough schedule he puts together each year.

This year, Jesuit went 22-7 in the regular season, won its district and roared through the region tournament, outscoring its three opponents 33-0 in 16 innings. When the Tigers faced Miami Belen Jesuit in the 3A semifinal, it marked the eighth time they appeared in the final four since 1992.
