JACKSONVILLE - Tom Petway III, a close friend of Gov. Jeb Bush's, has quit as chairman of the Florida Board of Governors to be co-chairman of President Bush's re-election campaign in Florida.

Petway, 62, chairman of Zurich Insurance Services in Jacksonville, sent a letter to Jeb Bush last month, resigning as chairman of the 17-member panel that oversees the state's public universities. He had been on the panel six months.

Petway will join Fort Lauderdale cardiologist Zach Zachariah as the campaign's co-chairmen.

Petway served as chairman of Jeb Bush's transition team after his re-election last fall. The governor named Petway to the new Board of Governors, whose members quickly chose him as chairman.
