ST. PETERSBURG - The first in a series of workshops to encourage parental involvement in schools and their children's education is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Victory Christian Center, 3012 18th Ave. S.
The topic is understanding school and community outcomes for African-American children. Historical and contemporary educational trends among African-Americans will be explored.
Refreshments and child care will be provided. So will transportation, if needed.
The workshops are a spinoff of meetings about schools held earlier this year at the urging of the African-American Voter Research and Education Committee.

June 25, Christ Gospel Church, 2512 22nd Ave. S, understanding your child's self and ethnic identity.
July 9, Stewart-Isom Memorial Church, 1820 Walton St. S, developing productive relationships with your child's school.
July 23, Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ, 1135 37th St. S, what African-American parents can do to reduce the achievement gap.
Aug. 13, Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church, 955 20th St. S, positive ways to manage your child's behavior.
The main sponsor is the University of South Florida College of Education's Carousel Center, which specializes in minority education issues.
The Pinellas County School District and the Coalition for a Safe and Drug Free St. Petersburg are supporting sponsors.
