A band of thundershowers wreaked havoc for traffic on Interstate 75 on Sunday, spawning eight to 10 crashes, including one involving a semitrailer truck and two vehicles.
That accident happened about 10 a.m. on the highway near State Road 54 when a 1995 Ford lost control in the southbound lanes and struck an adjacent 2003 Pontiac, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Lindsey Simpson, 17, of Largo lost control of the Ford, which spun counterclockwise, striking the Pontiac. A 1997 semitrailer truck, traveling behind the Pontiac, then hit the Ford.
Both the Ford and Pontiac slid off the road and landed in a ditch, according to FHP. The truck jack-knifed, blocking traffic for several hours. Simpson was brought to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she was treated and released. The remaining accidents were minor, said FHP Lt. Allan Carter.
