Phils power past Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jimmy Rollins and Jim Thome homered in the seventh, and Vicente Padilla pitched seven solid innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Angels 3-0 Monday night in the first meeting between the teams.

Padilla (5-7) allowed five hits, struck out two and walked none. The right-hander, who joined the Phillies in July 2000 as part of the five-player deal that sent Curt Schilling to Arizona, had dropped six of his previous seven decisions after shutting out Atlanta on April 19.

Rheal Cormier pitched a scoreless eighth and Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 16th save. It was his 103rd save with the Phillies, tying Steve Bedrosian's club record.

Jarrod Washburn (6-6) pitched 72/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. The Angels left-hander was 7-0 in 15 regular-season interleague starts - although he was 0-2 against San Francisco in the World Series.

The crowd of 25,902 groaned when it was announced the New Jersey Devils had beaten the Mighty Ducks 3-0 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup.
