TORONTO - Matt Tosca, the 13-year-old son of Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca, played the national anthems on his violin before Sunday's Father's Day game against the Cubs.
The younger Tosca, who enters high school in the fall, is a classically trained violinist who aspires to train at the Juilliard School. He spends up to seven hours a day practicing on the violin.
Matt used his grandfather's violin. His father smiled as Matt completed the Canadian anthem.
"I was real proud," Carlos Tosca said.
CARDINALS: Centerfielder Jim Edmonds was a late scratch because of a stomach illness. He pinch hit in the ninth and made the game's final out. Also, third baseman Scott Rolen, bothered by stiffness in his neck and back recently, left in the seventh inning but is expected to play tonight.
CUBS: Shortstop Alex Gonzalez missed Sunday's game because of a sore right hamstring. His status is unknown.
DODGERS: First baseman Fred McGriff missed his second straight game because of a tight groin muscle, but the team said it expects him to return Tuesday. Also, third baseman Adrian Beltre is playing despite a sore left hamstring. He is receiving treatment and cannot run at full speed.
GIANTS: Second baseman Ray Durham's careerlong hit streak ended at 16 games when he went 0-for-3 and was pinch hit for in the seventh. The Giants said he was lifted because of tightness in a leg muscle.
MARINERS: Infielder Greg Colbrunn was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 9 because of a strained muscle in his right side. Luis Ugueto was called up from Double-A San Antonio to replace him.
METS: Hitting coach Denny Walling filled in for Gary Pettis as first-base coach again. Pettis was hit in the head by an warmup throw by third baseman Ty Wigginton while on the top step of the dugout Saturday. Pettis spent the game in the dugout as a precaution.
RED SOX: Manager Grady Little said ex-Ray Ryan Rupe, recalled Friday from Triple-A Pawtucket, is expected to relieve starter Pedro Martinez tonight. The plan is for Martinez, making his second start since coming off the disabled list, to go five innings.
