Road renaming for slain deputy stalls

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida House on Wednesday unanimously passed a bill that would rename the Pasco County portion of U.S. 301 in honor of slain Sheriff's Lt. Charles "Bo" Harrison, but it appears the measure won't make it to the Senate floor.

State representatives approved H45B by a 112-0 vote and, at the request of Rep. Ken Littlefield (R-Wesley Chapel), observed a moment of silence for Harrison.

But Senate President Jim King says the Senate will not take up the bill - or any other bill outside the governor's call for the special session - because it would open the floodgate for other bills.

"We saw the dominoes ready to go," King said as he expressed regret at the bills that will not be taken up.

The special session ends today and all bills become moot and must be introduced again in another session.

Harrison, 57, who was two weeks from retiring from a 30-year career with the Sheriff's Office, was shot in the back and killed June 1 while sitting in his patrol car across U.S. 301 from Rumors nightclub in Lacoochee.
