NEW PORT RICHEY - Two new housing developments are ready to rise in west Pasco County.

The larger of the two, Pine Ridge at Sugar Creek, will feature either 720 apartments or 385 single-family homes in the Shady Hills area north of State Road 52, between Sugar Creek Boulevard and Moon Lake Road.

The development by K. Hovnanian will span 273 acres, including a 168-acre cypress preserve. The land was part of the 613-acre Sugar Creek project initially approved for thousands of homes in 1974 but later sold in chunks to different developers.

The smaller project, Rosehaven Villas, will have 82 villas on the east side of Moon Lake Road, between Oconee Boulevard and Wonder Avenue. The 89-acre site includes a 21/3-acre lake and about 40 acres of wetlands.

Both projects received approval Tuesday evening from the County Commission.
