Jan Stephenson wants to play Champions Tour

JOHNSTON, Iowa - Months after Annika Sorenstam played in a men's tournament, Jan Stephenson could do the same.

Stephenson's agent said Thursday he was working out details of an invitation for the former LPGA star to play in the Champions Tour Turtle Bay Championship in October in Hawaii.

"Discussions are in the final stages with just a few particulars to finalize," C.J. Roberts said. "We're on board ready to go."

Calls to a Champions Tour spokesman Thursday night were not returned.

Stephenson, 51, who at the height of her career was one of the most glamorous stars on the LPGA Tour, plays in the Hy-Vee Classic near Des Moines this weekend. The tournament is the first of three this year on the Women's Senior Golf Tour.

Stephenson has won 16 LGPA tournaments, most recently in 1987, and has won $23,559 in nine events this year.

BUICK CLASSIC: Four days after finishing 11 strokes behind Jim Furyk at the U.S. Open, Tiger Woods was looking up at him again after the first round of the PGA Tour event in Harrison, N.Y.

Woods shot 4-under 67 and was a stroke behind Furyk, four behind leader Briny Baird, at the soggy Westchester Country Club.

"It could have been a lot better," said Woods, who was 5 under after 10 holes. "I really had some chances to increase it, but instead it went the other way."

Furyk is trying to join Hale Irwin (1990) and Ernie Els (1997) as the only players to follow a U.S. Open victory with a win.

"I got three really good nights of sleep after hardly sleeping at all Sunday, so I'm well-rested," Furyk said. "I haven't run out of steam yet."

Baird, the son of Champions Tour player Butch Baird, shot a career-best 63, one off the course record, to take a three-stroke lead over Furyk and Joey Sindelar.

Retief Goosen and Shigeki Maruyama also shot 67, and Els was another stroke back.

ROCHESTER LPGA: Tina Barrett, whose only victory came in her rookie year of 1989, birdied the last three holes for 5-under 67 and a one-stroke lead after the opening round in New York. Anna-Jane Eathorne was in second, and two back was a group of nine that included defending champion Karrie Webb.

DIAGEO CHAMPIONSHIP: Alastair Forsyth, Brad Kennedy and Marc Warren shot 2-under 70 to lead the European PGA Tour event at Gleneagles, Scotland. Ivo Giner, Gustavo Rojas and Iain Pyman were a stroke back. Defending champion Adam Scott and Colin Montgomerie were two back.

WOMEN'S PUBLIC LINKS: Michelle Wie, 13, won her first-round match of the amateur event at Palm Coast. Known for her 300-yard drives, Wie beat Jane Rah 2 and 1.

JUNIORS: Brittany Lincicome of Seminole shot 73 and was in second place going into the final round of the Henry-Griffitts Blue Grass Invitational in Ashland, Ky. She was at 147, one shot back.
