Pitchers were the story in county softball this season and, not surprisingly, comprised the most selections on the Florida Sports Writers Association all-state teams.

Dani Hofer, the sophomore sensation for Palm Harbor U., added a Class 5A first-team selection to go with her Times all-county player of the year award won earlier this month.

Hofer went 13-3 with a 0.17 ERA and 254 strikeouts in 124 innings and threw shutouts in 11 of 14 starts.

Countryside's Bree Spence, the Times all-county player of the year in 2002, earned a second-team 5A spot after leading the Cougars to a region final. The junior went 15-5 with a 0.49 ERA.

St. Petersburg Catholic's Angela Vidal and Northside Christian's Amy McGathey finished their prep careers with second-team honors in 2A and A.

Vidal led the county with 19 victories, striking out 225 batters in 139 innings. McGathey went 16-5 and had the county's third-best batting average at .507.
