U.S. loses chance to advance

LYON, France - World Cup champion Brazil dominated the Americans on Saturday night, winning 1-0 and ending the U.S. team's chance to advance in the Confederations Cup.

Adriano scored in the 22nd minute, stripping the ball from defender Gregg Berhalter and coming in alone on goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made the initial save but had no chance to stop Adriano's shot off the rebound.

For the second straight game, the crowd whistled during The Star-Spangled Banner.

WOMEN'S WORLD CUP: South Korea qualified by beating Japan 1-0 in the third-place game of the Asian Women's Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. It joined North Korea, which kept the title by beating China 2-1 on Ri Kum-suk's penalty kick in overtime.

LEAGUES: Preki scored a goal and assisted on three others as host Kansas City beat Chicago 4-2 in MLS play. ... Erin Baxter scored her first goal in 45 career games as visiting Carolina climbed out of the WUSA basement by beating first-place Boston 1-0. Julie Fleeting had two goals and an assist as host San Diego beat New York 4-2.

TENNIS: Rubin defends title

Chanda Rubin defended her title at Eastbourne, England, beating Conchita Martinez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a final delayed more than two hours because of a security threat. More than 3,000 people were evacuated after tournament officials received a threatening phone call. Martinez hurt her left wrist after falling in the third set and had her thigh wrapped later in the set. Her appearance at Wimbledon is uncertain.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS: Kim Clijsters won the Ordina Open 6-7 (7-4), 3-0 when Justine Henin-Hardenne quit after hurting her left hand during the second set of the Rosmalen, Netherlands, event. Henin-Hardenne expects to play at Wimbledon. ... Greg Rusedski won his first title since August, defeating Tampa resident Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-2 in the Samsung Open final in Nottingham, England.

TRACK AND FIELD: Jacobs wins 12th title

Regina Jacobs won her 12th national title in the 1,500 meters at the U.S. championships in Stanford, Calif. She finished in 4 minutes, 1.63 seconds, the fastest in the world this year. Olympic champion Stacy Dragila won the women's pole vault. She has won six of seven titles since 1997.

EUROPEAN CUP: Mark Lewis-Francis won the 100 meters and Mark Rawlinson took the 400 hurdles, giving Britain a one-point lead over France in the men's standings in Florence, Italy. Defending champion Russia leads the women's race with 63 points.

HORSES: Master Derby trainer dies

W.E. "Smiley" Adams, who trained 1975 Preakness Stakes winner Master Derby, died Thursday in Lexington, Ky. He was 67. Adams also trained Run Dusty Run, who was second in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont and third in the Preakness to Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew in 1977.

VANITY HANDICAP: Azeri extended her winning streak to 10 races with a two-length victory in the $250,000 race in Inglewood, Calif. Last year's Horse of the Year has won 13 of 14 lifetime starts.

CYCLING: Jose Antonio Pecharroman virtually secured victory in the Tour of Catalonia in Vallvidrera, Spain, after winning a time trial to take the overall lead. He covered the 8.14-mile leg in 21 minutes, 49 seconds. ... Francesco Casagrande won the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse, finishing in 5:09.34.

GYMNASTICS: Courtney Kupets won her first national title, edging two-time defending champion Tasha Schwikert at the U.S. Championships in Milwaukee. Kupets finished with 74.950 points, less than three-tenths ahead of Schwikert and Hollie Vise.

WRESTLING: 2000 Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner flung training partner Corey Farkas off the stage, then used strategy to limit his mistakes for a 3-1 overtime victory at the U.S. World Team Trials in Indianapolis.
