HUDSON - A Spring Hill man stopped Tuesday by the Florida Highway Patrol for speeding was arrested after threatening a trooper with a loaded handgun, a report said.

Kenneth J. Weide, 59, was being held Wednesday at the county jail in Land O'Lakes on charges of DUI, failure to obey a lawful command, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and using a firearm while under the influence of drugs.

The incident occurred about 12:46 p.m. Tuesday near U.S. 19 and Tower Drive. Along with his driver's license, Weide provided trooper Ricardo Valdes with a concealed weapons permit.

A report said Valdes asked where the weapon was and Weide responded "right here," then picked up a handgun on the seat next to him and began to point it "in a threatening manner."

After repeated commands to put the gun down, Weide complied. He was asked to step out of the truck but resisted at first. Outside, the report said, Weide attempted to reach back into the truck where the gun was. Valdes and another trooper managed to take Weide down.

Weide, who said he was under the influence of numerous prescribed drugs, was taken to the hospital for medical clearance, then transported to jail.
