A closer Look: One Hillsborough church

GracePointe Community Church

By CONNIE DREW
Published June 28, 2003

LOCATION: 2640 N Lakeview Drive, Tampa; 269-2150.

SERVICES: Worship services at 10 a.m. Sunday; fellowship service includes praise, prayer and Bible study at 7 p.m. Wednesday (currently in a home fellowship format); a meal is shared starting at 6:30 p.m.

LEADERSHIP: The Rev. Chip Holmes, pastor

HISTORY: After pastoring at Calvary Chapel of Tampa for nine years, Holmes founded GracePointe Community Church in February, 2000. He established the church centered on building people into true followers of Jesus Christ.

Services are held at the Northlakes Recreation Center.

MEMBERSHIP: About 40 members

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: The church held its first Community Harvest Festival last year. It sponsored an Easter egg hunt this spring and also passed out plants and candy canes in neighborhoods near the church.

NOTABLE: GracePointe is preparing to move into a building of its own. Its motto, "Following Jesus in Sneakers and Jeans," reflects its philosophy as being a laid-back and casual church that is serious about its faith. Its belief is that it is not what is on the back but what is in the heart that matters. There is a children's ministry, called "Discipleland," designed to provide children with a solid Biblical foundation in a way they can understand.
