BOSTON - Marlins pitcher Kevin Olsen was released from the hospital and put on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion Saturday, one day after being hit in the head by a line drive.
"He probably won't be able to pitch for a couple of weeks," manager Jack McKeon said before Florida's game against the Red Sox.
Olsen needed six stitches for a cut that opened when he was struck near the right ear by Todd Walker's seventh-inning liner. The right-hander lay nearly motionless on the mound for nine minutes, moving his legs and blinking his eyes before being immobilized and carted off on a stretcher.
McKeon said Olsen was conscious and talking while he was on the ground. Olsen was held overnight for observation at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital a few blocks from Fenway Park.
He was released Saturday and was at the team hotel, with plans to return to Florida with the Marlins today.
The 26-year-old Olsen, in his third season with the Marlins, appeared to be hit behind the right ear as he followed through on his delivery. The ball bounced toward Florida's third-base dugout, and Walker wound up with a double.
ATHLETICS: Former Stetson All-America third baseman Brian Snyder, the 26th overall pick in the draft, agreed to terms. Oakland also signed two Florida State teammates: left-handers Trent Peterson and Matthew Lynch.
CARDINALS: Reliever Kiko Calero will miss the rest of the season after rupturing the tendon under his right kneecap against the Royals. Calero wrenched his knee when he turned sharply in an attempt to field Desi Relaford's single in the fifth. The 28-year-old rookie will have surgery Monday.
DIAMONDBACKS: Shortstop Tony Womack was carried off the field in the sixth inning against the Tigers after injuring his right knee. After fielding a chopper by A.J. Hinch near the mound and throwing Hinch out at first, Womack fell writhing in pain and grabbed the back of his knee. The seriousness of the injury was not known.
MARINERS: Infielder Greg Colbrunn was activated from the 15-day DL after a minor-league rehabilitation assignment because of a strained muscle in his right side.
METS: Outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, and Raul Gonzalez was recalled between games of a day-night doubleheader against the Yankees. Shinjo was batting .193 with one home run and seven RBIs in 114 at-bats.
PIRATES: Kevin Young, once the cornerstone of Pittsburgh's rebuilding efforts in the post-Barry Bonds era, was released by the team for the second time in his career. The Pirates released the 34-year-old first baseman in the final year of a four-year, $24-million contract.
RED SOX: The contract of outfielder Gabe Kapler was purchased from Double-A Portland and Jeremy Giambi went on the DL with left shoulder bursitis.
REDS: Left-hander Kent Mercker was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained back after their game against the Indians. The move is retroactive to June 25. Also, the team said Austin Kearns is day-to-day with a bruised left quadriceps.
YANKEES: Centerfielder Bernie Williams took fly balls and grounders in Tampa as part of his rehabilitation program after knee surgery last month. He could rejoin the team by the All-Star break.
