Floridians who missed a deadline for paying state taxes have a chance to wipe their slate clean without extra penalties beginning this week.

Tuesday is the start of the state's tax amnesty period, which runs until Oct. 31.

To guide taxpayers through the process, the Florida Department of Revenue on Tuesday is launching a new tax amnesty section on its Internet site at www.myflorida.com/dor Online amnesty filing and payment for sales and intangible tax will be available in mid-July, according to the department.

Even under the amnesty, taxpayers still owe 100 percent of the tax due. But they can save money through a significant cut in interest due and waiving of penalties that could add up to 50 percent of the tax bill. Plus, the department says paying up now reduces the chance someone will be a postamnesty target under a newly improved system to find scofflaws.
