OAKLAND, Calif. - Jamie Moyer took a no-hit bid into the seventh on the way to his 11th win of the season as the Seattle Mariners beat the Athletics 3-1 Monday night.
Moyer became the fifth 11-game winner in the majors and Greg Colbrunn added a pinch-hit home run off Ricardo Rincon in the ninth for the Mariners, who moved seven games ahead of the A's in the West.
Moyer walked Erubiel Durazo in the first before retiring the next 17. The left-hander, 40, who kept hitters guessing with his typical array of offspeed pitches, broke a three-game losing streak.
After retiring Scott Hatteberg to lead off the seventh, Moyer allowed three straight hits to load the bases. Durazo hit a bloop single into shallow left just over third baseman Mark McLemore to break up the no-hit bid. Miguel Tejada and Eric Chavez followed with singles and Moyer walked Adam Piatt with the bases loaded. Moyer then got pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez and Terrence Long to ground out.
The A's, who used a second-half surge to win 103 games in 2002 and capture the division, have lost five of seven and trail the Mariners 5-3 in the season series. Seattle took three of four April 14-27 at Safeco Field.
The Mariners had lost two straight over the weekend to San Diego. This was the second of two makeup games after the teams' season-opening series scheduled for Japan was canceled leading up to the war in Iraq.
Moyer left with one out in the eighth after Eric Byrnes doubled. Arthur Rhodes relieved and gave up a single to Hatteberg and walked Durazo to load the bases. Tejada hit into a forceout plate and Chavez grounded out as Seattle survived another scare.
Jeff Nelson pitched the ninth for his seventh save.
YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 5: On a night they committed four errors, allowed 15 hits and fell behind by three, visiting New York still found a way to win.
Ruben Sierra hit a pivotal three-run homer and Andy Pettitte won his fourth straight start as the Yankees extended their winning streak to eight.
Karim Garcia also homered for New York, which has won 11 of 12 to open a four-game lead over Boston in the East.
The Yankees rallied from a three-run deficit to win their ninth in a row against Baltimore despite tying a season high for errors.
"I don't like that number in the column, but none of them were from not paying attention," New York manager Joe Torre said.
The Orioles led 4-3 in the seventh when Sidney Ponson gave up singles to Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi. B.J. Ryan came in, and Sierra sent the fourth pitch from the left-hander into the leftfield seats.
It was the first homer Ryan has allowed in 36 appearances this season.
INDIANS 10-8, ROYALS 5-5: Casey Blake homered in both games and drove in seven to lead visiting Cleveland to the sweep.
Blake had three hits and drove in two in the nightcap. He hit his first career grand slam and drove in five in the opener.
He had five hits on the day as the Indians got their first doubleheader sweep since Sept. 20, 2000, in Boston.
Kansas City has lost four straight to fall out of first in the Central and has given up 44 runs in the skid.
WHITE SOX 10, TWINS 3: Magglio Ordonez homered twice and Jon Garland pitched seven strong innings to lead host Chicago.
Ordonez had a two-run homer in the fifth, the 1,000th hit of his career, and added a shot in the seventh that landed toward the back of the stands in leftfield.
TIGERS 6, BLUE JAYS 2: Mike Maroth gave up two runs over seven innings as host Detroit ended a nine-game losing streak. The Tigers (19-61) avoided tying the 1904 Washington Senators for the worst 80-game start since 1901.
RANGERS 6, ANGELS 3: Alex Rodriguez homered and drove in three and Mark Teixeira also homered for visiting Texas.
