Affidavit: Former teammate shot missing Baylor player

WACO, Texas - Police are investigating whether missing Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy was killed in Waco by a former teammate, who drove to Maryland, dumping the gun along the way, according to a court document released Monday.

The Dallas Morning News reported a search warrant affidavit, which police submitted June 23 to obtain permission to examine the missing player's computer, says former Baylor forward Carlton Dotson told a family member he shot Dennehy after an argument.

Dotson has not been arrested or charged. He could not be reached for comment, but from his home in Hurlock, Md., on Friday, he said he was cooperating with investigators.

"The case is currently still classified as a missing persons case," Waco Police Chief Alberto Melis said Monday. "But because of the information being received in regards to Mr. Dennehy's disappearance, this case is being investigated as if he were the victim of a homicide."

Citing a police informant, the Associated Press reported Dotson told a cousin he got in an argument with Dennehy while they were shooting guns and the 6-foot-10, 230-pound center pointed a gun at Dotson as if to shoot him. But Dotson instead shot Dennehy in the head.

Dotson, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward, left the basketball program this summer to find more playing time at another school, Baylor officials said.

The affidavit doesn't document the nature of the argument or a motive for the shooting, though Dennehy's girlfriend, Jessica De La Rosa, told police a man named "Harvey" had made threats to Dennehy.

After obtaining the warrant, police searched the computer but found no clues, District Attorney John Segrest said Saturday.

Dennehy was reported missing June 19, and his sport utility vehicle, with its license plates removed, was found in Virginia Beach, Va., on Wednesday. Virginia Beach police found no signs an injury had occurred in the vehicle.

GEORGIA TECH: Coach Paul Hewitt signed an extension with a base salary of $225,000 through 2007-08. He is 48-44 in three seasons at the school.

WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT: The Leon County Civic Center in Tallahassee was one of 16 sites chosen for first- and second-round games in 2004. Other cities: Albuquerque, N.M.; Ames, Iowa; Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, La.; Blacksburg, Va.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Columbus, Ohio; Durham, N.C.; Fairfield, Conn.; Minneapolis; Missoula, Mont.; Philadelphia; Santa Barbara, Calif. South Bend, Ind. and Tempe, Ariz.

Two Gators on Thorpe list

Florida's Keiwan Ratliff and Guss Scott are candidates for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back. Florida is one of nine schools with multiple players on the list.

Last season, Ratliff had 53 tackles, nine pass deflections, a forced fumble and an interception. Scott led Florida's defensive backs with 102 tackles.

Miami has four players on the list: Kelly Jennings, Antrel Rolle, Maurice Sikes and Sean Taylor.

MAAC SHRINKS: The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dropped its hockey program. As a result, American International, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Quinni-piac, Sacred Heart, Bentley and Mercyhurst, the schools in the league only for hockey, withdrew from the conference.
