The call came Friday: Gov. Jeb Bush would be pleased to have Darryl Rouson, president of the St. Petersburg branch of the NAACP, on hand at Tampa International Airport on Monday to greet the governor's brother, President George W. Bush.
Rouson jumped at the chance and got a few minutes with the most powerful leader in the world. They talked about two concerns close to Rouson's heart: religion and race.
Rouson said he had been praying for 30 days that God would "enlarge his territory," and he shared that with Bush, who has frequently discussed his own religious beliefs. Then, Rouson said, "I told him I appreciated the diversity of his Cabinet. He has appointed one of the most diverse Cabinets" in U.S. history.
