AL: Alomar sets up winner in debut

CHICAGO - Roberto Alomar is having fun now.

Alomar scored the winning run in his White Sox debut, trotting home on Frank Thomas' second homer of the game to lift Chicago over the Minnesota Twins 8-6 in 12 innings Wednesday night.

Pinch-hitter Paul Konerko hit a tying homer with two outs in the 11th for the White Sox. In the 12th Alomar walked with one out and Thomas homered with two outs.

"It is great when you are playing the game for something; that's why you play the game of baseball, you try to win and you try to get to the pennant," Alomar said.

"Now that we are playing for something I think it is a lot of fun."

Alomar went 1-for-5 in the leadoff spot a day after the White Sox got the 12-time All-Star second baseman from the Mets for three minor-leaguers.

Alomar dropped Torii Hunter's line drive in the third for an error. But he made a nice backhanded stab and flip on Corey Koskie's grounder to start a double play in the ninth.

Carl Everett, obtained Tuesday night from Texas for minor-leaguers, was 0-for-4 for Chicago.

Thomas praised White Sox general manager Ken Williams.

"That was awesome. Kenny went out and made two very big moves and showed he's serious about winning," Thomas said. "I'm 35. You never know when you're going to get another chance. I'm definitely going to go out and give everything I've got the rest of the season. There's no easy outs in this lineup now."

The resurgent White Sox completed a three-game sweep, winning for the sixth time in seven games. Minnesota has lost five of seven.

Eddie Guardado walked Alomar in the 12th. One batter later Thomas ended an 11-pitch at-bat with his homer to left.

MARINERS 13, A'S 0: Joel Pineiro pitched three-hit ball over eight innings to win his fourth straight start for visiting Seattle.

Bret Boone had two hits and drove in two and Dan Wilson went 4-for-5. Mike Cameron drove in three and Edgar Martinez hit a two-run homer and scored three to help the Mariners build a seven-game lead in the West heading into the final meeting of this four-game series.

Every Seattle player had at least one hit and all but Greg Colbrunn scored.

BLUE JAYS 8, TIGERS 2: Roy Halladay won his 12th straight decision and Carlos Delgado hit two home runs as visiting Toronto broke a four-game losing streak.

Delgado got his 91st RBI and Vernon Wells drove in four as the Blue Jays broke loose on the day they held a hitters' meeting. Toronto has led the majors in scoring most of the season but had six runs during its slump.

ROYALS 8, INDIANS 2: Raul Ibanez drove in three without getting a hit and Darrell May pitched a six-hitter for his third career complete game, leading host Kansas City. Carlos Beltran and Desi Relaford each had three hits and two RBIs for the Royals.

ANGELS 5, RANGERS 0: John Lackey pitched a four-hitter for his first major-league shutout and Tim Salmon hit a two-run homer for host Anaheim. Lackey won consecutive starts for the first time this season.

YANKEES AT ORIOLES, PPD.: The game was called at 3:10 p.m. after a five-minute rain delay and will be made up Aug. 14, an off day for both.
