Johnson's rehab start put on hold

PHOENIX - Diamondbacks ace Randy Johnson's scheduled rehabilitation start tonight for Triple-A Tucson has been canceled.

Manager Bob Brenly said Johnson was throwing well off the mound but was not comfortable fielding.

"All the reports have been good concerning his arm and knee," Brenly said. "We don't want to put him into a position where he is throwing well, his knee feels well and he comes off the mound to field a bunt and has something bad happen."

The five-time Cy Young Award winner had arthroscopic surgery two months ago.

Johnson reportedly was impressive in a 55-pitch outing Monday at a physical therapy and conditioning center in Phoenix. But physical therapist Brett Fisher told the Diamondbacks that Johnson looked tentative during fielding drills Tuesday.

The start was not rescheduled.

Meanwhile, right-hander Curt Schilling struck out six in four innings for Triple-A Tucson against Sacramento in his first rehabilitation start since breaking his right hand May 30.

Schilling, who allowed two runs on four hits and one walk, said he will make one more rehab start, then should be ready to rejoin Arizona's rotation.

ESCALATOR GLITCH: An escalator suddenly accelerated at Coors Field after a game, injuring 16, fire officials said. The extent of the injuries was unknown.

The escalator was carrying fans from the upper level to the street after a game that was followed by a fireworks show.

INDIANS STAY PUT: Cleveland signed a five-year contract extension to hold spring training at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, where it has trained since 1993. The former agreement would have expired in October.

The team made a financial proposal last month to move to Port Charlotte or Fort Myers. Both fell through.

ANKIEL SHARP: Left-hander Rick Ankiel allowed two hits in a seven-inning complete game for Double-A Tennessee, losing 2-1 to Carolina in a doubleheader opener.

Ankiel, the former Cardinals star, didn't let a player reach except in the third, when he gave up both hits, two walks and two runs. He has had three solid starts in a row.

ORIOLES: Right-handed reliever Willis Roberts has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow and will be sidelined at least three weeks.

REDS: First baseman Sean Casey began serving a two-game suspension for participating in a June 13 bench-clearing fight with the Phillies.

RED SOX: Boston made another move to bolster its struggling bullpen by signing right-handed reliever Todd Jones.

ROCKIES: Struggling right-hander Jose Jimenez has lost his job as closer. Left-hander Brian Fuentes and right-hander Justin Speier will share the role.

ROYALS: An MRI exam on right-hander Kyle Snyder revealed a muscle strain in his right rotator cuff. He probably will miss his next start.

YANKEES: Centerfielder Bernie Williams is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation stint Friday with Double-A Trenton.
