NL: Cards overcome Alou's homers

CHICAGO - Kerry Wood wanted to give the Cubs' bullpen some rest. Instead, St. Louis hitters gave Wood some extra time off.

Jim Edmonds and Albert Pujols hit consecutive homers in the first and Tino Martinez tied a season high with four RBIs as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 11-8 on Friday.

Moises Alou hit three homers and tied a career best with five RBIs, but the Cubs lost for the eighth time in 10 games. It was his first three-homer game. Sammy Sosa hit his 511th homer, tying Mel Ott for 16th all-time.

Wood, who had won his previous three decisions, lasted three-plus innings, his shortest outing since April 9, 2001, when he also pitched three innings.

"It's obviously disappointing," he said. "We needed to win. I knew that coming in. I let our team down, and I really just hurt our bullpen for the rest of the series."

St. Louis made it 5-0 in the second on pitcher Brett Tomko's run-scoring single, Bo Hart's run-scoring double and Edmonds' sacrifice fly.

Martinez led off the third with his 10th homer.

"Kerry just didn't seem to get in any kind of rhythm," Martinez said. "His curveball was out of the zone a little bit, and his fastball was up in the zone."

Alou homered leading off the second and fourth then hit a three-run drive in the ninth.

BRAVES 8, EXPOS 6: Russ Ortiz won his fourth consecutive start for host Atlanta. Ortiz tied Colorado's Shawn Chacon for the most victories in the NL at 11. He fell behind 4-1 then retired 10 of his last 12 batters.

Down 4-3 in the sixth, Matt Franco's single drove home Robert Fick. Rafael Furcal followed with a sharp grounder just to the left of second baseman Jose Vidro, who bobbled the ball and settled for throwing out Furcal at first. That allowed Javy Lopez to score.

After Marcus Giles and Gary Sheffield walked, Chipper Jones greeted Joey Eischen with a two-run single to right to make it 7-4.

D'BACKS 3, DODGERS 1 (10): Quinton McCracken hit a two-run single in the 10th, sending host Los Angeles to its seventh consecutive loss. Arizona has won 14 of 16.

The Dodgers tied it in the seventh when Jolbert Cabrera's fielder's choice scored Mike Kinkade. But Arizona loaded the bases in the 10th. Robby Hammock bounced into a force at home, but McCracken's single scored Luis Gonzalez and Shea Hillenbrand.

GIANTS 7, PADRES 6: Barry Bonds's two-run homer highlighted a five-run fourth for visiting San Francisco. It was Bonds' 638th homer, and the two RBIs gave him 1,704, moving into 15th all-time. In the ninth, Bonds drew his 2,000th walk.

In the fourth, Ray Durham's triple tied it at 4. J.T. Snow's groundout made it 5-4. And Marquis Grissom singled ahead of Bonds' homer.

MARLINS 2, PHILLIES 1: Derrek Lee hit the go-ahead single off Jose Mesa with two outs in the ninth for visiting Florida.

The Marlins, who have won three of four, had one hit, a Juan Pierre single leading off the game, during the first eight innings and finished with just three. They scored a run in the fourth on a walk, steal and groundout.

Mesa walked Mike Lowell with two outs in the ninth, and Juan Encarnacion singled Lowell to third. Lee followed with a single up the middle on a 3-and-2 fastball.

ROCKIES 8, BREWERS 6: Jay Payton and Juan Uribe drew bases-loaded walks in the eighth for visiting Colorado. Greg Norton led off the inning with a homer off Leo Estrella, whose failure to hold a 6-5 lead cost 30-year-old outfielder turned reliever Brooks Kieschnick his first win.

Colorado loaded the bases after Norton's franchise-best fifth consecutive pinch hit. With one out, leftfielder Geoff Jenkins made a diving catch near the line to rob Larry Walker of a hit. But Estrella walked in the go-ahead run on four pitches.

METS 7, REDS 2: Tom Glavine pitched seven strong innings for his first victory since May 18 for visiting New York. The left-hander was 0-5 with a no-decision since his last victory, a span that included two injuries.

Jeromy Burnitz had three hits, including one of the longest homers at Great American Ball Park. His drive in the seventh deflected off a walkway on the home run smokestacks in center, a drive estimated at 444 feet that made it 6-1.

PIRATES 3, ASTROS 2: Reggie Sanders homered in the eighth for host Pittsburgh. The Pirates had lost 15 times when leading or tied after six.
