HOUSTON - Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel was in good condition in a Houston hospital Saturday, one day after being shot during an attempted carjacking.
Kiel, a former safety at Texas A&M, was sitting in his 1983 Buick Park Avenue in a mall parking lot when he was shot in the abdomen and leg by an unidentified man, police said.
Houston police spokeswoman Sandra Aponte said a man in his late teens or early 20s said something to Kiel, then fired at least three shots.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, got into a vehicle and drove away, Aponte said.
Kiel, 22, was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital. The hospital released no further information.
Martha Kiel said her grandson was shot once in the ankle, once in the knee, and once in the abdomen. She said none of the wounds were serious, and he was expected to have minor surgery.
"He's expected to make a full recovery and have no serious problems," Martha Kiel said.
Kiel was selected 62nd overall in April's draft.
BRONCOS: Tight end Dwayne Carswell was arrested then released on $2,500 bail for allegedly picking up his girlfriend by the neck.
He was charged Friday with simple battery, domestic violence and obstruction of an officer, said Sgt. Nikita Hightower, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. Carswell was not asked to enter a plea and a preliminary hearing was set for Tuesday.
A court complaint said the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Carswell picked up Nkeiruka Anyamone, 25, by the neck outside a bar early Friday. The complaint also said the woman was bitten on the right arm and treated by medical personnel.
Carswell, 31, has faced similar trouble before.
In 2002 Carswell was accused of assaulting and harassing a woman. After two mistrials he agreed to restitution and community service. In 1998 Carswell was arrested in Denver after police say he grabbed his then-girlfriend by the neck. Two years later, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and got one year's probation.
This time, if Carswell is found guilty or pleads to a lesser charge, he could be in violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy and might face a fine or suspension.
DOLPHINS: Defensive end David Bowens tore an anterior cruciate ligament last week and likely will be out until at least November. Harold Lewis, Bowens' agent, said his client hurt his knee Monday when he jumped off a ladder and came down awkwardly after changing a light bulb in his house.
