WASHINGTON - Sixteen-year-old Eddie Gaven, the youngest player to sign with MLS, scored his first career goal in the ninth minute of overtime to lift the MetroStars 3-2 over D.C. United on Saturday.
Gaven, who entered as a substitute goalie in overtime before moving to a field position, took a long pass along the left sideline from Amado Guevara, made a run down the wing and scored on a left-footed shot that beat Nick Rimando from 8 yards.
Jaime Moreno and Ricardo Clark also scored for the MetroStars (7-4-3), and Marco Etcheverry and Dema Kovalenko had goals for D.C. United (3-5-6).
In Columbus, Ohio, Tom Presthus made a sprawling save in the second minute of OT to preserve a scoreless tie with Dallas.
WUSA: Jaclyn Raveia and Cheryl Salisbury scored three minutes apart in host New York's 2-1 victory over San Jose. Stacey Tullock scored to lift host Philadelphia to a 1-1 tie with San Diego.
CUP QUALIFIER: Host Mexico and Japan tied at 2 in the first of a two-game series to determine who will earn the last berth for the Women's World Cup. They play this week in Japan. The Cup opens Sept.20 in the United States.
HORSES: Balto Star sets record
Balto Star upset the field and set a course record to win the $750,000 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. The 5-year-old gelding, ridden by Jose Velez Jr., ran the 13/8 miles in 2:12:78 to top With Anticipation's 2:12.81 set last year. Balto Star, posting his ninth career win in 27 starts, returned $76, $28.40 and $15.
BELMONT PARK: Mineshaft won the Grade I $500,000 Suburban Handicap in New York, beating last year's Breeders' Cup Classic champ, Volponi, by 21/4 lengths. Mineshaft returned $3.50, $2.40 and $2.10 to increase his earnings to more than $1.3-million.
CHURCHILL DOWNS: Tap The Admiral won for the first time in 27 stakes races, holding off Freefourinternet by 11/4 lengths in the $288,500 Firecracker Breeders' Cup at Louisville, Ky. The 5-year-old paid $16.40, $8.20 and $6.
HOLLYWOOD PARK: Filly Dimitrova won the $750,000 American Oaks at Inglewood, Calif., paying $11.20, $6.40 and $4.60. Patrick Valenzuela rode five winners on the 10-race card for the second time in three weeks. He leads jockey standings with 71 winners, 13 more than Victor Espinoza.
MEADOWLANDS: McArdle edged Art Major by a nose in the $650,000 William R. Haughton Memorial Final for older pacers, returning $2.60, $2.80 and $2.20.
SANDOWN PARK: Falbrav beat Nayef by three-quarters of a length to win the $583,000 Eclipse Stakes, denying the favorite a chance to win British racing's Triple Crown. Five-year-old Nayef won the Prince of Wales' Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. The final leg is the King George this month.
EQUESTRIAN RECORD: Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington won the $50,000 Grand Prix in Lake Placid, N.Y., an unprecedented third straight year. It was her 114th win, adding to her U.S. record.
