OAKLAND, Calif. - Athletics outfielder Jermaine Dye is expected to miss three to six weeks after leaving Sunday's game against the Angels with a separated right shoulder.
Dye was injured when he tried to knock the ball loose from Angels catcher Bengie Molina in a collision at home in the fourth. Dye tried to score on Eric Byrnes' fly to medium center.
Darin Erstad's strong throw was a little off line and the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dye, who never touched the plate, put a shoulder into Molina, 5-11, 220, who held on to the ball for an inning-ending double play.
"He puts his heart and soul into the game and injuries are a part of it," A's manager Ken Macha said. "Those were two big people colliding there and I wouldn't expect Jermaine to take the side of caution."
A's trainer Larry Davis called it a second degree separation and said X-rays will be taken today to determine if there's additional damage.
WHITE SOX-REDS TRADE: Cincinnati tried to strengthen its bench by acquiring infielder D'Angelo Jimenez from Chicago for minor-league right-hander Scott Dunn. The Reds were looking for someone to replace outfielder Wily Mo Pena, on the disabled list with a strained hamstring.
ANGELS: Rightfielder Tim Salmon has kidney stones and plans to see a urologist today in Anaheim. ... Shortstop David Eckstein suffered whiplash while making a catch in short leftfield and left the game.
BLUE JAYS: First baseman Carlos Delgado left in the sixth with left knee soreness and is day to day.
CUBS: Centerfielder Corey Patterson left with a sprained left knee in the eighth after landing awkwardly on first base.
GIANTS: With catcher Benito Santiago sidelined a few more days with a dislocated pinkie, San Francisco purchased the contract of Alberto Castillo from Triple-A Fresno.
YANKEES: Centerfielder Bernie Williams went 1-for-4 with a double and a run in the third game of his rehabilitation stint with Double-A Trenton. He played seven innings of the host Thunder's 6-5 victory over New Britain.
