SCOUTING REPORT: The A's are trying to keep pace in the American League West with the best team in baseball. Oakland trails the Mariners by six games, mostly because of a dominant home record.

The A's have a league-high 31 wins (against 15 losses) at home. But they needed a ninth-inning rally Sunday to avoid being swept at home by the Angels.

But not all the news was good Sunday. The A's lost outfielder Jermaine Dye for 3-6 weeks with a separated right shoulder after a home plate collision with catcher Bengie Molina.

"I've always said that Jermaine puts his heart and soul into the game," A's manager Ken Macha told mlb.com. "He goes all out all the time, and there was no holding him back there."

It has been an injury-plagued season for Dye, who hit 24 homers for the A's last season. Dye missed a month after knee surgery and was batting .160 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 42 games.

Meantime, the A's got a rest Monday. It was their first day off after 20 consecutive games. The A's went 11-9 during the stretch.

"I think when you do play all these games," Macha said, "you get tested on what's happening on your whole roster, from one to 25."

DISABLED LIST: Dye, LHP Micah Bowie.

CONNECTIONS: Rays DH Ben Grieve played for the A's from 1997-2000. ... Rays reliever Jesus Colome was signed out of the Dominican Republic by the A's. ... Oakland reliever Jim Mecir pitched for the Rays from 1998-2000.

OVERALL SERIES: The A's lead the series 36-12, including 19-5 in Oakland. The Rays won one of nine last season.
