Cross Bayou to keep playing

Cross Bayou stayed alive in the District 5 Major Baseball tournament on Monday by defeating Gulf Beaches 9-4.

Justin Helms hit two homers and J.C. Fortunato struck out five as Cross Bayou advanced to face Meadowlawn tonight. Meadowlawn eliminated Pinellas Park National 2-1. Jacob Cook hit a two-run homer in the first.

At the District 12 tournament, Tarpon Springs claimed a spot in the second round by defeating Hudson 13-3 in five. Tony Pikos allowed two hits and no earned runs. Nick Dublino had three hits and Pikos two as part of a 10-hit attack.

Oldsmar remained undefeated after a 5-4 victory against Dunedin American. D.J. Dougherty went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. A double play turned by infielders Max Virgilio and Jordan Powers helped preserve the win.

JUNIOR BASEBALL: Casey Combs hit a grand slam in Pinellas Park National's 9-7 victory against Cross Bayou.

Sunday in District 12, Palm Harbor American secured a spot in the second round by defeating Largo American 13-4. Mike O'Brien had four hits and seven RBIs. Harrison Stern and Sam Moroff drove in two runs.

SENIOR BASEBALL: Pinellas Park National began defense of its District 5 title by defeating Gulf Beaches 9-7. Henri Andrews and Paige Thomas had two hits each. Adam Cheesebrew allowed two hits in five innings.

Jeremy Root struck out six and allowed three hits in East Lake's 13-3 victory against Largo National in five. Drew Turnier had three hits and Matt Romary two doubles.

MAJOR SOFTBALL: Cross Bayou/Gulf Beaches advanced to the District 5 final with a 4-3 comeback victory against Seminole. Britney Bennett tied the score in the sixth. Evan Szeliscowski drove in the winning run with a double. Allison Shirley picked up the win and hit a triple. Jessica Fass scored two runs for Cross Bayou/Gulf Beaches.

Baypoint scored three in the sixth to defeat Azalea, advancing to the losers' bracket final tonight against Seminole. A leadoff double by Carly Ferrara and hits by Katie Newcomb, Katie Armwood, Evan Ligon and Renee Smallwood helped fuel the rally.

JUNIOR SOFTBALL: Kelly Calkins' two run inside-the-park homer was the difference in Azalea/Meadowlawn's 2-1 victory against Seminole. Ceria Johnson went the distance as it advanced to Wednesday's final.

MINOR SOFTBALL: Safety Harbor defeated Palm Harbor 12-2 at the District 12 tournament Monday. Claire Gould struck out six in the four-inning game. Alyson Grossman had three hits for Safety Harbor. Tarpon Springs defeated East Lake 10-4 behind Gillie Eiland. She went the distance and did not allow a walk. Alex Haley drove in two runs for Tarpon Springs.
