OAKLAND, Calif. - Randy Winn is looking forward to seeing his former Devil Rays teammates this weekend.
At least the ones he recognizes.
Much has changed since last season, when Winn was the Rays' All-Star and Most Valuable Player and then traded to the Mariners as compensation for signing Lou Piniella.
"I felt pretty comfortable here from the beginning," Winn said by telephone from Seattle. "I didn't know how the guys would take to me, but they were great and made it easy to fit in.
"The first couple times I saw myself in a mirror the colors looked weird."
Winn has started in leftfield for the Mariners, teaming with Mike Cameron and Ichiro Suzuki to form one of the sleekest and smoothest outfields, but hasn't been consistent offensively, hitting .262 with two homers and 31 RBIs and a team-high-matching 60 strikeouts. The Mariners may be looking for an upgrade.
"I think I can play better," he said. "I'm trying to do the little things."
Early in the season he got lots of questions about the novelty of being the third player traded for a manager. The topic may come up again this weekend. "I would think so," Winn said.
