Diamondbacks to get one ace back Saturday

PHOENIX - Arizona's Curt Schilling was cleared to return from the disabled list Thursday and will make his first start Saturday against San Francisco.

Schilling, who was unavailable for comment, broke his pitching hand May 30 when a comebacker hit his index finger.

Also, Randy Johnson pitched four innings in his second rehab start for Double-A El Paso. Johnson, who left the game down 2-0, threw 63 pitches, allowing two unearned runs and three hits. No return date has been set.

GMs to be traded

FISHKILL, N.Y. - Two minor-league teams will trade general managers after the season.

Steve Gliner, GM of Hudson Valley of the Class A New York-Penn League, will take over Fort Myers, the Twins' Class A affiliate in the Florida State League. Fort Myers GM Dave Burke will take over Hudson Valley, a Rays affiliate.

And it's no gag. The decision was based more on family than baseball, the GMs said.

Gliner said the move allows his sons, ages 6 and 2, to be closer to their grandparents, who live in Florida and Charleston, S.C. Burke said the move takes him 60 miles from his hometown of Wayne, N.J., where his siblings live.

DODGERS: Right-hander Kevin Brown, still hobbled by a strained abdomen, likely won't start Sunday. Wilson Alvarez would replace him. Meanwhile, infielder Ron Coomer will leave the club today for Minneapolis and an exam to determine the cause of dizziness, headaches and blurred vision.

Also, Alan Casden said he would move the team to downtown Los Angeles near Staples Center if he buys the team. By razing Dodger Stadium, Casden said he could offer fans a better experience and provide thousands of new housing units in Chavez Ravine. Casden is bidding against, among others, Bucs owner Malcolm Glazer.

GIANTS: Right-hander Jesse Foppert was sent to Triple-A Fresno a day after allowing eight runs in 22/3 innings. Also, catcher Benito Santiago was scratched after his finger swelled up. He missed four games with a dislocated finger before starting Wednesday.

INDIANS: Shortstop Omar Vizquel has more torn cartilage in his right knee, according to an MRI. He will miss at least another month. A decision on surgery, which likely ends his season, won't be made for two weeks.

METS: Outfielder Jeff Duncan was recalled from Double-A Binghamton to fill in for leftfielder Cliff Floyd, who is day to day with a sore right wrist. Right-hander Jason Roach was sent to Triple-A Norfolk.

RANGERS: Left-hander and first-round pick John Danks signed.

RED SOX: Pedro Martinez will get his rematch against the Yankees. Martinez, who hit Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter with pitches Monday, is scheduled to pitch July 25. Also, centerfielder Johnny Damon missed Thursday's game with a bruised hip.

TWINS: First baseman Kevin Young, released by the Pirates on June 28, agreed to a minor-league deal. Also, centerfielder Torii Hunter will miss tonight's game to attend the funeral of his high school baseball coach.

WHITE SOX: Tim Tisch threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the rookie-level Appalachian League. The left-hander, who struck out six, was perfect until his only walk led off the sixth.

YANKEES: Rightfielder Raul Mondesi said he is not happy about being benched. Manager Joe Torre benched Mondesi on Thursday and said Karim Garcia, a left-handed hitter, will start against right-handers until the All-Star break. Mondesi has one hit in his past 23 at-bats.

"Because I had a bad week?" he said. "What about the first two months of the season? Who was playing against right-handers?

Also, reliever Antonio Osuna, out with a strained right groin since June 14, is scheduled to come off the DL on Saturday.

ALL-STAR GAME: Now that the game "counts," AL manager Mike Scioscia said he believes it's time to drop the rule requiring every team be represented.

Because of the rule, Scioscia and Dusty Baker had little leeway in picking the teams for the game, which determines which league gets homefield advantage in the World Series.
