Charge: Grave robbed to help fake own death

JACKSONVILLE - A South Carolina woman accused of putting a disinterred skeleton in her car and setting the vehicle on fire in an attempt to stage her own death was arrested here Thursday.

Sandra Grice, 37, of Dillon County, S.C., was charged with desecration of human remains, arson and violation of federal probation, said Sheriff Billy Page of Marion County, S.C.

Grice staged her death last year to avoid appearing in court on federal drug charges, Page said.

Last October a passerby discovered a female skeleton in Grice's smoke-filled car, which was abandoned in Marion County. But the flames had gone out.

The body was stolen from a cemetery in Dillon County.

"We don't know who dug it up," said Dillon County Sheriff Harold Grice, no relation to Sandra Grice.
