FOXBORO, Mass. - The United States took another positive step after last month's failure in France, beating El Salvador 2-0 Saturday as it began defense of its CONCACAF Gold Cup title.

Eddie Lewis and Brian McBride scored for the United States, which went 0-2-1 in June's Confederations Cup. The Americans beat Paraguay 2-0 in an exhibition Sunday.

Captain Claudio Reyna, who had knee surgery Nov.18, made his first start since last summer's World Cup. He played the first 60 minutes at midfield before being replaced by Clint Mathis.

MLS: MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard received his English work permit, clearing the way for his transfer to Manchester United. He played in a 3-3 tie against host New England. The MetroStars scored three goals in seven minutes to erase a 3-0 deficit.

WOMEN'S WORLD CUP: Homare Sawa and Karina Maruyama scored as Japan defeated Mexico 2-0 in Tokyo to secure the final spot in this autumn's tournament.

BOXING: Bodyguard sues Tyson

A bodyguard for promoter Don King has sued Mike Tyson, alleging the former heavyweight champ punched him twice during a scuffle on Interstate 95 and broke a bone in his face.

Isadore Bolton, 44, of Boynton Beach, sued for compensatory damages of more than $15,000. The suit was filed Friday in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. Bolton didn't report the incident to police. According to the suit, Bolton was in a car escorting Tyson, 37, and his entourage on May 3. He saw Tyson's car was no longer following and doubled back to find Tyson standing in the median.

Tyson got "more aggravated and more annoyed" with Bolton, who tried to get Tyson in the car. "The next thing he knew, Tyson was at his open window, opened the door and punched Mr. Bolton twice in the face," said John McGovern, one of Bolton's lawyers.

FRISSINA WINS: For the second time in less than a year, Pete Frissina of Tarpon Springs defeated Jesus Perez, this time by split decision in an IBF bantamweight elimination bout in Las Vegas. Frissina (28-3, 15 knockouts) knocked Perez down twice in the first round with overhand rights. The scores were 116-109 and 116-109 for Frissina, and 113-112 for Perez, who lost a point for hitting on the break in the seventh.

COLLEGES: Priest faces allegation

An affidavit with a police search warrant alleges a priest supplied alcohol at a cookout attended by a Pitt football player who hours later died in a fall at a church. Witnesses told police that Billy Gaines and four other Panther players were at a cookout at which Rev. Henry Krawczyk supplied liquor. The cookout began June 17; Gaines fell at about 2:30 a.m. June 18 and died later. Krawczyk has not been charged in connection with Gaines' death or alleged underage drinking.
