Krispy Kreme sign spat

Krispy Kreme doughnut shops have proliferated in the Tampa Bay area, as they have across the nation. Each store has the chain's signature neon "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign to inform customers when the glazed treats are fresh and warm.

But the company ran into unaccustomed opposition when its South Florida expansion took it to ritzy Boca Raton. The city, known for its finicky design rules, barred the neon "hot light." A simple illuminated sign will have to do.

"This one will be different," Krispy Kreme spokeswoman Ann Urban said. "As far as we're aware, we can't discover any other "hot lights' that are not neon."
