Editor: The Lake Patience Road freeway proposal is threatening very rural Lake Patience Road residents and new communities in Oakstead.
Our county is planning to add new arteries to relieve congestion from both U.S. 41 and Collier Parkway to the Suncoast Parkway.
Residents of Lake Padgett and Bell Lake roads should be aware that their roads will in the future connect from Collier to the proposed four-lane Lake Patience divided highway.
The Lake Patience Road connection is proposed to run through the future Ledantec property, Suncoast Crossings and Bexley Ranch and connect to Sun Lake Boulevard, which is another planned artery to relieve future congestion the south side development of State Road 54 will bring to Pasco.
No wonder commissioners ignored our pleadings of the past regarding quality of life, inconsistent density with surrounding areas, incompatibility, wildlife issues, flooding concerns and inadequate roads and infrastructure. They knew then that we would be affected in a much larger way by their proposed fixes of the future.
Please come to the Community Center on U.S. 41 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31 to protect what life is remaining in the heart of Land O'Lakes.
Editor: One look at the rapt expressions on the faces of the Cypress Elementary children depicted in the July 7 Pasco Times touched my heart. Something magical happens when a teacher can reach out and inspire children to learn more.
What is the School Board thinking when it refuses the unselfish pleas of a veteran teacher, Ken Ford, who is offering what can only be a life-enhancing experience for these children?
The mind, like the body, requires daily training in order for it to function well and we should plan our day so that the mind is put through the same paces as our bodies.
There is always a way of solving problems and I suggest that the School Board put more effort into creating a solution than arguing about why it can't be done. Is this a case of Rome burning while Nero fiddles?
Re: Homeless
Editor: Why can't vacant stores be outfitted with additional restrooms and showers? Starting the day clean and with teeth brushed would be a lift to anyone.
The poor will always be among us. Some do not choose this life and deserve a chance.
Editor: Higher salaries are being paid to Pasco school teachers than to teachers in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando counties. We know that teachers who buy homes in Pasco pay less, taxes are lower, and sales tax is lower.
The teachers are coming. If not, why not?
Editor: Lately I have been reading a number of letters on who should be our next superintendent of Pasco County's schools.
Some time ago a very good friend of mine, Tom Weightman, a Republican, who was a great if not the best superintendent we ever had, retired and endorsed John Long, a Democrat, to succeed him. Long was elected and is now ready to retire, and he endorses Chuck Rushe, a Republican, to succeed him.
As we choose our next superintendent only one factor should be considered and that is qualifications. Mr. Rushe is well qualified. Our children are too important to elect just anyone to this position and politics has no place in this selection.
Rep. Heather Fiorentino is doing a good job in the Legislature and I hope she stays there.
