It's a double header of folk music tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa's UU Dome.
Dale Crider is a Florida musician and wildlife enthusiast. He has played conservation-themed music for two decades throughout the United States, Paraguay, Canada, Australia and the Caribbean, and onstage with the Bellamy Brothers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and John Hartford. Crider has also been interviewed by Ted Koppel of ABC.
Carrie Hamby hails from Tallahassee, using guitar and accordion to play Florida folk music. Hamby was recognized for her song All or Nothing at the Will McLean Festival and is gearing up to release a third CD.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Dome, 11400 Morris Bridge Road. Admission is $8. Call 1-877-332-2973.
One man show at church
Curt Cloninger is a two-fold performer, providing entertainment and a Christian message. Cloninger will present a one-man show with comedic and dramatic elements Sunday. The writer and actor has toured North America, flexing his talent at colleges, churches, theaters and conferences.
The show is at 7 p.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Memorial Highway. Admission is free. Call 886-2536.
Cafe open on third Thursday
If you're restless on the third Thursday of each month, Unity Church of Today has the answer. Third Thursday Cafe is an intimate evening with music, art and refreshments in a coffeehouse atmosphere. New singers, songwriters, poets and storytellers will perform at each gathering.
Third Thursday Cafe operates from 7:30-9:30 p.m. every third Thursday at the church, 16104 Hanna Road in Lutz. Admission is $5 and refreshments are available for purchase. Call 235-6822.
Summer Safari at Lowry Park
Lowry Park Zoo will present another installment of evening fun tonight. Sponsored by Kash n' Karry and the St. Petersburg Times, Summer Safari Nights will let zoo fans take a break from the daytime heat. Access to rides such as "Jungle Carousel," "Camel Caravan" and the 25-foot "Tasmanian Tower" rock climbing wall are free to Summer Safari guests with a wristband. The event will feature live music and animal encounter shows, in addition to the more than 1,000 resident animals of the zoo. All restaurants, gift shops and beverage stands will be open.
The event is from 5-8:30 p.m. at the zoo, 1101 W Sligh Ave. Regular park admission is $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors 50 and older, $5.95 for children age 3 to 11 and children 2 and under are free. Wristbands are free after 5 p.m. The final Summer Safari Night will be Aug. 22. Call 935-8552.
