Old foes could face off for sheriff again

James "Eddie" McConnell has filed early paperwork, which will let him raise money. It could mean a rematch with Sheriff Richard Nugent.

BROOKSVILLE - The stage is being set for a rematch of the 2000 contest for Hernando County sheriff.

On Friday, James "Eddie" McConnell filed preliminary paperwork with the county's Supervisor of Elections to contest the seat held by Sheriff Richard Nugent. While the election is not until 2004, pre-qualifying for the race enables Democrat McConnell to raise money for his campaign.

In 2000, then-Maj. Nugent edged out McConnell by 2 percentage points in a contentious campaign.

In the days following his defeat, McConnell quit his job as a sergeant in the Sheriff's Office, citing his plan not to obstruct Nugent's administration and divide the rank and file with his presence.

McConnell had worked for the Sheriff's Office since 1978. He was hired as a detective with the Crystal River Police Department before he joined the Brooksville Police Department in 2002.

McConnell believes he is qualified to be sheriff.

"With over 26 years of proven leadership and commitment in proactive/reactive law enforcement in partnership with the citizens of Hernando County, and as a lifelong resident, I have a genuine understanding of the county's safety and law enforcement needs," McConnell said in a prepared statement.
