Bob Hosack's departure came without much fanfare.
After being involved with athletics in Pinellas for 40 years, including the past 19 as the county activities director, Hosack decided to retire. Not that he really had a choice: Hosack, 62, was in a lucrative retirement plan that requires participants to leave five years after they sign up.
He had accumulated enough vacation days to ease out before he officially bid farewell June 30. But there was no big retirement party. That was the way he wanted it.
"I just wanted to be able to slip into the sunset," Hosack said. "My retirement was no big deal."
He did, however, accomplish some big things during 40 years in the school system.
Hosack was a coach at Boca Ciega when the school integrated in 1968. He also helped the county comply with Title IX, adding track, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball and volleyball for girls while he was activities director.
In June Hosack was among six new members inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
"I feel I made a contribution," Hosack said.
