Capturing the greats of jazz
The renowned photographer of jazz artists William Gottlieb captured all the greats of the '30s and '40s: Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and more. His photographs are considered the premier images of the Golden Age of Jazz.
Gottlieb photographs have appeared on hundreds of album covers, in the National Portrait Gallery and on postage-stamp homages to jazz.
The Florida International Museum currently has more than 70 of his works on display, including the one of Billie Holiday, above. The exhibit continues through Sept. 7.
The museum, at 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg, also has on display "Famous Women on Quilts: Patterns of Power," quilts honoring women of the 20th century, through Aug. 31, and "Maze of Illusions and Puzzles," a 4,000-square-foot interactive exhibit featuring a giant maze, optical illusions, rainbow prisms, spinning illusions, colored shadows, reflections and challenging puzzles, through Aug. 10.
Permanent exhibits include "John F. Kennedy: The Collection," and "When the Cold War Got Hot," highlighting events during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 seniors, $6 ages 6 to 18. Annual passes and group discounts available. 727 822-3693 or www.floridamuseum.org
Teen magician coming to Tampa
The magician is still a teenager, but he's been a professional for years, touring the country during his breaks from school to perform at theme parks and corporate events.
Two years ago, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Brian Kaufman's hometown newspaper, said of him: "He's skilled. He's poised. He's funny. He's 17. By blending comedy and magic with stage presence and a business sense well beyond his years, Kaufman is building quite a following."
Now a 19-year-old theater student at DePaul University, Kaufman is on a summer tour of comedy clubs.
His Magic on the Run show for families comes to the Tampa Improv at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5 for those 3 and older. The Improv is in Centro Ybor, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. (813) 864-4000.
